The
Maltsters is open all day every day from 11am - 11pm
or so, except for Christmas Day when we just open the bar from
12.00 to 2.00pm.
There is a big log fire in one room with two large tables (The
Dart Cabin) and another room (The Map Room) has charts of South
Coast Waters and The Channel Islands all over the walls. Both
these rooms can accommodate children, who are not permitted
in the bar itself or the restaurant.
Food is served anywhere in the pub lunchtimes and evenings,
but the bar always has Marinated Feta, Olives, Seafood Salad,
Pickled Eggs and the ever changing Maltsters Mix on offer. We
always recommend booking if you want to eat in the 'restaurant'
area overlooking the creek, and larger groups must book. At
busy holiday times we often have to turn away 'walk-in' diners.
We always have Dartmoor IPA from Princetown Brewery on tap (light
and hoppy, 4.0%, a beautiful beer) and from 1 to 3 guest ales,
depending on how busy it is. Over a year about hundred guest
ales will be served of which the most catastrophic is Robinson's
Old Tom 8.5% closely followed by the local Teignworthy Russian
Imperial Porter 10.5% (RIP to you).
We serve about 15 wines by the glass, such as Sharham Madeleine
Angevine (from over the hill) through Rioja (El Coto of course),
a Chilean Sauvignon Blanc, , Brouilly, Chablis, Cava, and
so on. The list keeps changing so we don't get bored.
There are loads of games - dominoes, Jenga, Scrabble, chess,
Monopoly, shove-halfpenny, (not that it ever rains in Tuckenhay),
a library of pub guides, cookery books, wine and drink books,
and grown ups are allowed to read Quentin's back Beanos. We
also have a dart board, and something that almost exactly but
not quite fails to resemble a dart's team. In summer we rig up a dart board outside by the crocodile bar.
Our cricket team (the famous MCC) plays about 8 times a year against sundry local teams and occasional visitors, new players always welcome, we do a fine line in ringers.
Our football team (Maltsters Mercenaries) seems to have retired after the famous drubbing of Cornworthy 10-1, but we hope to do the same to Blackawton one day....
Of course we now have the finest smoking area in the South hams, a stunning area overlooking the creek and the woods with a real fire and all mod cons (ie ashtrays and seats) Spotted so far from the smoking area : a seal, kingfishers, foxes, white egrets and one boat aground..
I had better stop typing on and go and do some work.
