The
Mill above Tuckenhay Creek had a new paper making machine installed
in 1955: the job took a whole week and the mill owner brought
everyone down to The Maltsters Arms for a feast when at last
the machine started making paper. Paper making continued there
until 1976. A successor to the bygone industries of Tuckenhay
was the craft of wine making. Sicilian born Giuseppe Cannizzario
came to England in 1961 - the skilled paper makers at that time
were the Italians.
The
son of a wine making family, Giuseppe (Pepe) settled in Torquay.
He eventually realised a long held ambition to start a winery
in England when he was able to rent the old brew house next
door on Bow Creek. In 1989 the T.V. chef Keith Floyd bought
The Maltsters Arms. He re-developed the pub extensively (and,
some would say, eccentrically!) at vast expense. Pepes Old Winery
was converted to accommodation incorporating three splendidly
O.T.T. en-suite hotel bedrooms, a sauna and a solarium. The
whole establishment was re-named Floyds Inn (Sometimes). In
1996 Mr. Floyd went bust.
Nowadays we are known once again as The Maltsters Arms ......
A country inn supplying real ales, fine wines, good food and
superb accommodation in a uniquely beautiful setting.
